** Ian Dunlop is one of the Godfathers of Americana music because of his past with Gram Parsons in the International Submarine Band, considered to be the first urban band to embrace country music. The ISB was short-lived (1966-68) but paved the way for country-rock and Alt-country. The band did numerous recordings; several singles and an lp were released but they met with little success. Twenty years later the band’s songs began to get heard; several songs that had been ignored and shelved were released on compilation CDs and ltd edition vinyl. In the ‘90s, alt-country bands cited Gram Parsons & the ISB as an influence.
**Ian Dunlop was a founding member of The Flying Burrito Brothers that continued the ISB’s concept of amalgamating country music and R’n’B. The Burritos, with its frequently shifting personnel, achieved cult status but never had a hit.
**Dunlop and Parsons shared spontaneous ideas that sparked their songwriting concepts. Dunlop’s songwriting continues in a similar mode of impressionistic and eccentric lyricism delivered in a country/roots flavor.
