Masakichi – Broken DC – Minnie Birch

April 8, 2016 @ 8:00 pm

The Roar Club & Club Biscuit are pleased to announce a night of post-rock shoegaze shenanigans with the sublime Masakichi, supported by the mighty Broken DC.

For fans of MBV, Mogwai, I Break Horses and The Joy Formidable, Masakichi combine fuzzed up indie rock structures with dance-orientated beats to create one of the (mini) albums of the year with the brilliant ‘Hummingbird’.

Masakichi guitarist Reuben Gotto has spent the past few years travelling the world working with bands such as indie heavyweights as Foals, Maccabees and Alt-J. Taking inspiration from both these acts and from further afield, he wrote the song that comprise ‘Hummingbird’ on the road in hotel rooms or in speeding tour buses.

Finding kindred spirits vocalist Hannah Cartwright (Snow Ghosts) and bassist Hattie Williams (Telegraphs) in London, the trio began to transform Reuben’s tracks into fully formed songs. Enlisting Ben Calvert (Killing Joke, Calvin Harris) on drums, the band laid down the six core songs that comprise ‘Hummingbird’ at the end of last year with Rich Wilkinson (Kaiser Chiefs, Adele). It was released on Fierce Panda records, home of early releases by the likes of Coldplay, Placebo and Ash.

‘A stunning series of indie-pop songs that are definitely worth sticking around for…’ (Alreadyheard.com)

“Think hauntingly melodic post-rock – but wrapped around thumping beats and fuzzy grunge influences.” (Kerrang!)

Broken DC last played on one of our bills when supporting Public Service Broadcasting, since then their sound has been transmogrified, or as soundcloud wisely states… ‘Couched in a sound that is eternal dusk’, thanks in no small part to the visionary production of Dan Sullivan [Ulver, Sunn O))]. This is an sonic exploration of what lies between light and shade, between the coruscating and the excoriating. Guitars construct gentle, swaying canopies, then crash down like falling oaks. Quiet and Loud.

The rather wonderful Minnie Birch opens proceedings with her gentle but untamed “songs to mend hearts”.

Tickets cost £7 and can be purchased from http://www.wegottickets.com / http://www.seetickets.com / Esquires & Mario’s Hair Design (Kempston).
