Last year The Roar Club and Club Biscuit brought Ezra Furman to Bedford. In 2016 we are excited to bring you another helping of transatlantic rock’n’roll with the amazing BellRays.
Blues is the teacher. Punk is the preacher. It’s all about emotion and energy, experience and raw talent, spirit and intellect. Exciting things happen when these things collide. Bob Vennum and Lisa Kekaula made the BellRays happen in 1991 in East LA but they weren’t really thinking about any of this then. They wanted to play music and they wanted it to feel good. They wanted people to WANT to get up, to NEED to get up and check out what was going on. Form an opinion. React.
They took everything they knew about; the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, the Who, the Ramones, Billie Holiday, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams, the DB’s, Jimmy Reed, Led Zeppelin, to name a very few and pressed it into service. The results are irresistable.
‘For two decades The BellRays have sounded like a cranked up Seventies Detroit scuzz band fronted by a Sixties soul belter. When the MC5 toured with replacement vocalists The Bellrays’ Lisa Kekaula gave her best punk rock Aretha’ (Stewart Lee)
(You may also know vocalist Lisa Kekaula from Basement Jaxx’s massive hit ‘Good Luck’…)
In the UK to perform at the All Tomorrow Parties’ festival, we are privileged to be able to bring them to Esquires. As essential as breathing. This will be spectacular.
